another day, another year. i've hit the quarter-century mark.

i made the mistake of reading the most recent issue of Time today as my keep-exercise-from-being-boring text. there's an article looking at the Bush Administration's plans for getting re-elected. constantly speaking against a backdrop of tanks and fighter planes, part of the plan seems to be to keep the country running scared, freaked out that the terrorists are going to come again, that they're going to try to punish us for our prosperity. what a load of bullshit. if something bad happens, it's going to come from within. it's going to come from union workers who found out that while they volunteered to take pay cuts to help the company recover, the CEOs gave themselves a bonus. it's going to come from low-income women who are denied access to birth control and abortions, and then kicked off welfare when they have another child. it's going to come from urban parents whose children are going to schools so poor that they can't buy textbooks or keep teachers. it's going to be a class oriented rising, a rebellion against the wage gaps and the hoarding of money. and if something isn't done to stop it, it's probably going to be bloody.

those of us who are in the middle class are at the moment insulated from a lot of these problems. even if we sympathize, donate, volunteer it's hard to say whether or not we really get it. what's it like to live in the consumer culture when you can't consume? many of us middle-class types choose not to participate in the buying frenzy, but for us the refusal of consumerism is a choice, not a necessity.

so what're we gonna do when the revolution comes?

10:40p - uberraschung!!
so the birthday has definitely turned out for the best. i went over to Em's, thinking that the extent of the surprises that i'd get would be maybe a few more people than i was expecting, or perhaps being taken to a restaurant, but it was better. there were indeed more people there than i was expecting, which was lovely, but the best in a very large box sitting in the middle of the floor, which i first mistakenly thought to be a box leftover from Em's move. silly Annie. Em doesn't leave empty boxes sitting around. so everyone else jumps out and says, "Surprise!" and i grin and look happy. then something inside the box starts scratching, sounding rather like they'd popped poor Seti in and he wanted out. so i open the box to pick up the cat, but instead of a cat, out pops REID! i was totally floored, and actually stood there for a moment in shock before shrieking (sorry 'bout the ears, guys) and leaping into a full-force body hug. that i was definitely not expecting.

thanks for keeping the secret, everyone! i've had a lovely birthday! :)
